Hello from Uganda!
This is the evening of Day 1. We arrived in Entebbe last night at 8:15pm and finally arrived at UCU around midnight. I couldn't really see anything last night on the drive from the airport because there are so few lights in this country. I was also pretty much delirious with exhaustion. We are staying in the Honors College dorms on the hill above most of the university. We are the only students living there right now: the rest of the Honors students come next week. Today was a long, but interesting day. I really wish I had more sleep last night, but immediately jumping into a schedule may be a good thing in the long run. We had breakfast in one of the classrooms, then had some orientation sessions. Before lunch we were taken on a tour of campus. I don't think this campus is really much bigger than Olivet, but because it's on the side of a hill, with steep dirt paths, it was a bit of a trek. Lunch was good. We had lots of choices of traditional Ugandan food. Banana paste, rice, small potatoes, bean stew, boiled chicken, and pineapple. After lunch we had a 3 hour break, so I promptly fell asleep. Then at 5, we hiked to the top of the mountain where the university sits. It's called Monkey Hill. We saw a few monkeys, but I liked the views of Mukono town and the rural village. Dinner was much the same food, good food. Now I'm sitting in the Main Dining Hall because there is no wi-fi in the dorms right now. Very soon I'm going to bed.
Tomorrow, we have more orientation meetings in the morning. Then we are all going to Kampala to change currency and do some shopping and exploring.
On Friday, we're leaving at 5am for Rwanda. It's a 15 hour bus ride!
I won't be able to give another update until next week or the week after. Until then, toodles!
